Experience one of Marin County’s most magical natural phenomena with an unforgettable evening paddle on Tomales Bay.
On select dark, moonless nights, the waters of Tomales Bay come alive with shimmering blue-white light. This glow is created by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates that emit light when disturbed. With every paddle stroke, the water can sparkle beneath you. Schools of fish leave glowing trails, seals dart through the bay creating bursts of phosphorescent light, and night herons hunt along the shoreline under the stars.
It’s a rare, awe-inspiring experience that feels almost otherworldly.
What to Expect
This three-hour guided tour launches from Miller Boat Launch next to Nick’s Cove. The first 30–40 minutes are spent on shore preparing for the adventure before heading out into the darkened bay for optimal viewing conditions after sunset.
Because bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, sightings can’t be guaranteed—but tours are scheduled during the most ideal conditions, typically around 12 dark nights each month.
