The name is personal. It honors Laura's mother, Isabel, and her sister, María, and the menu follows that same thread: a modern Mexican bistro with a Californian accent, built around Laura's upbringing in Acapulco and her family's roots in Guerrero and Sinaloa.

The team works with heirloom corn from Oaxaca, chocolate from Chiapas, artisanal mezcals, produce from local farmers, and seafood from the California coast. Signature plates include duck carnitas enmoladas, ceviche Acapulqueño, and an artichoke tetela built on gold masa — traditional foundations handled with a contemporary, restrained touch.
The room itself is intentionally small. With a handful of seats and an unhurried pace, Maria Isabel is designed for a lingering dinner rather than a quick one, and private dining is available for milestones and smaller gatherings. Reservations are strongly recommended.
One practical note from the restaurant: this is a residential block, and parking is limited. Street parking is available along California Street and Presidio Avenue, but arriving early — or taking a ride share — is the smarter plan.
