San Francisco has an end-of-summer tradition that turns a garden into a concert hall with no walls. Flower Piano is back at the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park, and this year marks its eleventh season, running eleven days from September 10 through 20, 2026.
According to the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, which presents the festival alongside Sunset Piano, twelve pianos are placed throughout the garden's 55 acres for the length of the event. Some host scheduled performances from local musicians across classical, jazz, tango, world, and cabaret, and the rest are open for anyone to sit down and play. It is one of the city's most genuinely interactive music events, and a rare chance to hear live piano drift through a redwood grove or a native plant garden.
How It Works
The concept is simple and part of the charm. Guests wander the garden and seek out the pianos, following the music from one collection to the next. According to the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, the pianos are open for anyone to play from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily whenever a scheduled performance is not underway, on a first-come, first-served basis, with a request to keep to about fifteen minutes when others are waiting.
Scheduled sets run throughout each day across garden spots like the Redwood Grove, the Garden of Fragrance, and the Great Meadow, so no two visits feel quite the same. Picnicking is encouraged in the general festival area, and guests are welcome to bring reusable water bottles for the on-site refill stations.
