October is one of San Francisco's best months. Evenings stay mild, the fog often takes a break, and the calendar fills with free festivals and neighborhood traditions that locals plan around all year.
This year's highlights include Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park, Fleet Week and the Blue Angels over the Bay, the Castro Street Fair, Litquake, the Italian Heritage Parade in North Beach, the Potrero Hill Festival, and the LEAP Sandcastle Classic at Ocean Beach. Here's what to know about each one.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
Golden Gate Park hosts one of the city's best-loved free music festivals for three days, with stages across Hellman Hollow, Lindley Meadow, and Marx Meadows. Bluegrass, country, and rock share the bill, and parking near the park disappears quickly, so Muni, a bike, or a walk in from the Inner Sunset or the Richmond is the easiest way in.
When: Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October 4, 2026
Where: Golden Gate Park

San Francisco Fleet Week
Fleet Week fills the waterfront with Navy ship tours, military band concerts, Fleet Fest, and the Parade of Ships sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge. The centerpiece is the air show between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. On air show days, transit or a bike beats driving to Marina Green, and Marin residents can watch the Parade of Ships from above in the Marin Headlands.
When: October 4 to 12, 2026; air show October 9 to 11, 12 to 4 p.m.
Where: San Francisco waterfront; air show viewing at Marina Green

Castro Street Fair
Harvey Milk founded the Castro Street Fair in 1974 to support the neighborhood's businesses and celebrate its community. The 52nd annual fair fills Castro and Market Streets with local artists and vendors, live stages, DJs, and dancing in the street, and donations support community beneficiaries and the Rainbow Flag over Harvey Milk Plaza. Castro Station sits right inside the fairgrounds, so Muni Metro is the simplest way to arrive.
When: Sunday, October 4, 2026, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Castro and Market Streets

Litquake and Lit Crawl
San Francisco's literary festival returns for its 27th year with readings and author conversations at venues around the Bay Area, starting early with Litquake Out Loud and a book fair at Yerba Buena Gardens on October 4. It closes with Lit Crawl, a free evening of readings in bars, bookstores, and venues across the Mission District. Seating is first come, first served, so pick your must-see readings in advance and arrive early.
When: October 8 to 24, 2026; Lit Crawl on Saturday, October 24, 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: Venues across San Francisco; Lit Crawl in the Mission District

San Francisco Italian Heritage Parade
North Beach has been the heart of Italian San Francisco for generations, and this free parade celebrates that history every October. The route runs from Jefferson and Powell Streets near Fisherman's Wharf to Washington Square, with Fleet Week military bands joining the lineup. Washington Square fills first, so claim a spot early and stay in the neighborhood for lunch or an espresso afterward.
When: Sunday, October 11, 2026, 12:30 p.m.
Where: Fisherman's Wharf to Washington Square, North Beach

Potrero Hill Festival
Now in its 51st year, this neighborhood party fills four blocks of 20th Street with live music, local food vendors and artists, a children's fun fair with rides and a petting zoo, and a beer and wine garden. Proceeds benefit Daniel Webster and Starr King elementary schools and the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, which says a lot about this sunny, family-oriented corner of the city. Streets around 20th close for the day, so arriving on foot or by bike is easiest.
When: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: 20th Street between Wisconsin and Missouri Streets

LEAP Sandcastle Classic
At the 44th annual Sandcastle Classic, teams of architects, engineers, contractors, and designers partner with local elementary students to build giant sand sculptures on Ocean Beach. The event is free to watch, and funds support Leap's arts education programs in Bay Area public schools. Bring layers, since the wind off the Pacific can make Ocean Beach feel much cooler than the rest of the city.
When: Saturday, October 24, 2026, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Where: Ocean Beach at Balboa Street
