The 3rd Annual Treat Walk Returns to San Rafael: A Free Halloween Evening for the Whole Family
San Rafael keeps a short list of evenings worth rearranging a Thursday for. The Treat Walk has quietly earned a place on it.
Now in its third year, this free Halloween gathering gives families an early, easy way to celebrate - no tickets, no late night, no long drive. It lands two days before Halloween, which makes it less a substitute for trick-or-treating than a gentle start to it.
What Is the San Rafael Treat Walk?
The Treat Walk is a free, family-friendly Halloween celebration at the San Rafael Community Center, held Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. Children collect treats as they move through the grounds, with pumpkin decorating, face painting, and games along the way. Costumes are encouraged.
It's hosted by San Rafael Library & Recreation, with participation from other city departments. Admission is free, and no registration is required.

What the Evening Looks Like
Everything happens in the Lonatese Garden, so it feels open and unhurried rather than packed into a hallway. Expect treats for every age, pumpkins to decorate and carry home, face painting for the younger ones, and games spread across the garden.
The two-hour window is the quiet genius of it. Four to six is early enough that no one melts down and late enough to feel like an occasion - a real consideration for parents coming off a workday with a toddler in tow.
A Downtown Tradition
The Community Center sits on the B Street corridor, a few minutes from the Fourth Street shops and close to Albert Park. These are the small civic rituals that give a town its texture, the kind of thing residents come to count on each fall.
We notice them because place is our work. An event a city runs well, year after year, at no charge, says something real about how that community treats its families - the sort of detail that rarely shows up in a listing and often matters more than one.
Good to Know Before You Go
Parking near the Community Center is limited, so leave a few extra minutes. Dress the kids before you arrive, and bring a bag for treats and a freshly decorated pumpkin.
